Before a bridge connected the two shores, Benicia operated the Solano, once the largest train ferry ever built, carrying entire rail cars across the strait to Martinez. That crossing point is now spanned by the Benicia-Martinez Bridge, and the town’s identity as a transportation gateway predates the highway by nearly a century.
