A square is 100 square feet of roof. One square of composition shingle weighs roughly 250 pounds, and a second layer doubles it. That means a 25 square roof produces about 3 tons of debris in a volume that barely fills a 20 yard container.
So the container is chosen by tonnage, not by how full it looks. We size from the roof measurement and the number of layers, and we say in advance whether the load is likely to run past the allowance. That is far cheaper than finding out from the scale ticket.

The arithmetic: 25 squares of single layer composition is about 3.1 tons, which fits a 30 yard allowance and exceeds a 20 yard by more than a ton. Two layers on the same roof doubles it. Tell us the square count and the layers and the size follows from the number, not from a guess.
Roofing material is accepted in any container. The refusals matter more here because tear-off debris is loaded fast and mistakes get buried.

Count squares, not cubic yards. Up to 15 squares fits a 15 yard, 15 to 25 squares takes a 20 yard, and 25 to 35 squares needs a 30 yard. Two layers doubles the weight, so a two-layer 20 square roof sizes like a 40 square single layer.
About 250 pounds for composition shingle. Architectural shingle runs heavier, closer to 300. Ten squares is more than a ton, which is why a container that looks half empty can already be at its limit.

The truck still needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach and 22 feet of overhead clearance, so overhead lines near the roofline are worth mentioning too.
The arithmetic above assumes shingle alone, but a tear-off that exposes rotten or water-damaged plywood decking pulls that decking out too, and wet wood is considerably heavier than the dry framing lumber the estimate expects. If the roof has visible soft spots or past leak damage, mention it when booking so the container accounts for both layers rather than shingle alone.
Asphalt shingle is accepted at facilities that follow CalRecycle standards for construction and demolition debris, and some facilities in the region recover the asphalt itself for reuse in paving. Wood shake and shingle route differently, since untreated wood is handled as clean lumber rather than roofing waste.
Shake and wood shingle weigh far less than composition but take up more space, so on those roofs the container is chosen by volume in the normal way. If the tear-off is mixed, or another trade is using the same container, say so, because the tonnage estimate from the square count stops applying.
